A colloquial term for early pick-and-place robots that relied on crude mechanical stops, limits, and guides to control motion. With only on/off motor control triggered by physical limit switches, these robots produced a distinctly jerky, stop-start movement accompanied by audible noise—hence the affectionate nickname.
